A GIF is a sequence of still images shown in a loop — closer to a flipbook than to a video. Two quirks of the format drive everything else. First, a GIF can only use 256 colors per frame. A modern video frame contains millions of colors; squeezing that down to 256 is why gradients, skies and skin tones can look banded or posterized in a GIF. Second, a GIF has no efficient compression between frames the way video does. Video codecs are brilliant at storing only what changed from one frame to the next; GIF is far more primitive, which is why it bloats.
Why GIFs get so huge
Because a GIF stores each frame with little cross-frame compression, its size is driven almost entirely by three things multiplied together: dimensions × frame rate × length. A big, smooth, long GIF is a large GIF, always. That's why a clip that's a slim 2 MB as an MP4 can become a 30 MB GIF — the format simply isn't built for efficiency.
This also explains why the fixes are so effective: shrink any of those three multipliers and the file drops fast. Halve the width and you roughly quarter the size (because both dimensions shrink). Cut the frame rate from 30 to 15 and you roughly halve it. Trim two seconds off the length and you save that fraction directly. Combine all three and a 30 MB monster becomes a tidy 3 MB in one pass.
The settings that keep GIFs small and sharp
Here's how to get a GIF that's both light and good-looking:
- Keep it short. The best GIFs are two to six seconds. A GIF is a moment, not a movie — if you need more than a few seconds, you probably want a video.
- Drop the frame rate to 10–15 fps. GIFs don't need cinematic smoothness. Fifteen frames per second looks perfectly fluid for most motion and roughly halves the size versus 30.
- Shrink the dimensions. A GIF for a chat or a README rarely needs to be more than 480 pixels wide. Smaller dimensions are the single biggest size saving because they cut both width and height.
- Choose a clip with limited color and motion. A simple animation or a screen recording with flat colors compresses beautifully; a busy, colorful, fast-moving scene fights the 256-color limit and bloats. Pick GIF-friendly footage when you can.
