What actually makes a video file big
Three things decide the size of a video file, and every compression setting targets one of them:
- Resolution — the pixel dimensions. A 4K frame has four times the pixels of 1080p and nine times 720p. More pixels, more data, bigger file.
- Bitrate (quality) — how many bits the encoder is allowed to spend describing each second of video. Phones record at very generous bitrates "just in case," which is the main reason camera files are so enormous compared to how they look.
- Codec efficiency — how cleverly the video is compressed. A modern encode (H.264 or H.265) spends bits only where your eyes will notice them, unlike a raw camera recording that treats every part of the frame equally.

The settings that work for 90% of videos
